Brief Desktop Background Tutorial

We know lots of people who don't know which is the best or the optimal desktop background resolution for their screen monitors.

Therefore, I made a chart with the most popular sizes (inch) for the fullscreen (4:3, 5:4), widescreen (16:9, 16:10) and HD monitors, and for all this our HD collection offer various category of wallpapers.

The oldest, but not the forgotten monitors models are the fullscreen (Normal Ratio Aspect). In the opinion of the monitors manufacturers, for each size there's an optimal resolution.

So, this is what it looks like:

For fullscreens (that's the past trend and maybe only the limited present trend) the resolutions formats are:

  • 15 inch (38cm)    >>    1024x768

  • 17 inch (43cm)    >>    1280x1024 SXGA

  • 19 inch (48cm)    >>    1280x1024

  • 20 inch (51cm)    >>    1600x1200

  • 21 inch (53cm)    >>    1600x1200

  • For widescreens and HD (that's the future trend) the resolutions formats are:

  • 17 inch (43cm)    >>    1440x900 WXGA

  • 19 inch (48cm)    >>    1440x900

  • 20,1 inch (50cm)  >>  1680x1050

  • 21 inch (53cm)    >>    1680x1050

  • 22 inch (56cm)    >>    1680x1050

  • 24 inch (61cm)    >>    1920x1200**

  • 26 inch (66cm)    >>    1920x1200**

  • 28 inch (71cm)    >>    1920x1200**

  • 30 inch (76cm)    >>    2560x1600**

  • ** Starting with those resolutions any display should be optimized for playing Full HD (1080p) multimedia content, including huge wallpapers.

Three issues that need to be kept in mind every time we set our resolution are:

  • The distance between the monitor screen and us.

  • The refresh rate that the monitor can support in terms of hardware.

  • Depends on how well we see.

PS: Don't forget to relax your eyes at regular intervals of time. If you can, look out the window or at objects that are far away from you.
